PCB board:

I will be making my own PCB board using the laser cutter, copper coated plastic board, paint and a bath of ferric chloride.

designed in solidworks, I made the bracket 60mm deep for the light. there is a hole in the back for a type B USB port for downloading and charging the light. To mount it to the seatpost of the bike, It’s a 27mm diameter hole. this opening will be clamped shut with a bolt, square on one side, round on the other.

whats next..?

material? I want to use aluminum, as I want this light to be everything an average bike light shouldn’t!

For the bracket, I will need something strong enough to hold the light securely.

I will need to fit the arduino board plus max7219 chip plus the dot matrix all inside the light. I’ve worked out that the light should be about 60mm deep. There’s is a big difference between the technology available and the technology I can afford… that’s why it is so big.

what i need is:

aluminum

plastic

pcb board

and some way of fabricating this.

I don’t have an idea of what the bracket will look like yet, that will be my next step.

I’ve decided that the form will follow function. The LED dot matrix is square in nature, therefore the design will follow that form

new direction…

“With more people taking to the roads on bicycles, it’s hard for new-comers to feel confident. This product explores the relationship between cyclist and driver, and challenges the eye of the driver to see cyclists in a slightly different context. The LED dot matrix allows the cyclists to download their own graphics or animations to the rear bike light.”

Good news Tuesday!

After some much needed inspiration and guidance form tutor Jon Rogers, my project finally has some life about it. It’s been right in front of me all the time, but I could never justify it… Also those expensive MAX7219 chips have finally arrived, so that’s something to be happy about!

I’m not going to reveal the revelation just yet, going to get my head round it first, all you need to know is I’m going ‘Steampunk’ it, ‘Daft Punk’ it and ‘Troikafy’ it! I’m gona design the shit of this…

(hope I can pull it off…)
